à deux

(2020)

à deux is a series of five pieces which investigate the dichotomy between fear of vulnerability and need for connection with others. The work reflects an understanding that we each have our own set of personal armour built up over time through our encounters with others, with the intention of keeping us safe. The pieces are activated when worn, their relationship to the wearer exposing this frictive dualism. The progression of the collection tells a personal story of understanding and challenging this armour, with each piece utilising the inherent qualities of the materials to further communicate these ideas. Chainmail, a material which is designed to protect but is also heavy and restrictive is paired with red garnets, whose physical color and hardness symbolize pain and blood, but also strength and love. This dualism permeates through the materials, while the shapes focus on covering and restricting parts of the body which we use to communicate; the eyes, mouth, hands, and heart. Simultaneously, the pieces hold the wearers in close proximity, accentuating the taut and tentative space in between. When worn, they visually represent the push and pull of intimacy and personal boundaries, this need for connection paired with fear of vulnerability.
